Ostře sledované vlaky -- Jiří Menzel (1966)

Closely Observed Trains, by Jiří Menzel from 1966.

An apprentice in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia at a village railway station seeks his first sexual encounter, and has difficulties doing so.

Whilst being set during WWII, this is a coming of age film. Whilst being set during WWII, this is actually very gentle. Whilst containing violence and sex, it manages to do so in a charming, wry manner.

I love the simplicity of this film. It has fantastic camera work, despite it being so dark, and great characterisation. It's uniquely beautiful hour and a half, and a wonderful way to portray the innocence of adolescence.

Enjoy
